Youth Program
AIASF, in collaboration with the Center for Architecture + Design, hosted this free event for kids of all ages to attend and learn about architecture and landscape architecture while honing their creative skills.
Participants were divided into small groups led by an architect who guided an exercise on the significance of sketching. Courtesy of the Museum of Craft + Design, kids took home a free exhibition-inspired MakeArt Kit and museum ticket. Parents and kids who wished to participate were also treated to a private architectural tour of the David Bushnell Center for Athletics & Community, led by Richard Parker, AIA, LEED, Principal of 450 Architects.
“Kids Draw Architecture” is an educational program originally created in 1988 by the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, AIA Santa Barbara’s sister organization, to connect architects and landscape architects with children and their parents and to build an appreciation for landscape, architecture, and the built environment.

Principal, 450 Architects
Richard has more than thirty years of experience providing comprehensive architectural design services. As principal and co-founder of 450 Architects, he has led design and project management on a diverse range of projects and has extensive experience leading neighborhood community design workshops. He volunteers his time with nonprofit groups including Education Outside, the San Francisco Urban Agriculture Association, and the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco, and holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University.
Gao Design
Henry is a San Francisco–based architectural designer, illustrator, artist, and photographer who takes inspiration from his childhood into his everyday work. He started sketching at age 6, spending days at architecturally significant sites in China, mesmerized by their proportion, symmetry, and details.
As a practicing architect, sketching and design drawing are among Douglas’s prime means of communication. He is always prepared to investigate ideas through many varieties of drawing and painting techniques, encouraging the guesses and attempts that reveal other possibilities within a problem.
