Youth Program

Construct + Create: Design/Build Studio

September 14, 2025 | 11:00 AM–4:00 PM
Zack | de Vito Architecture

Ever wondered what it feels like to be an architect for a day?

Participants stepped into a real architecture studio and discovered what it’s like to think, sketch, and build like a designer. Guided by Jim Zack, FAIA—an architect, builder, maker, and creative—they explored how ideas move from paper into physical form using the same design methods architects rely on every day.

In this workshop, participants got an introduction to contemporary architects and architecture, practiced sketching techniques, saw how CAD works, experimented with spatial concepts, and tried out an exciting model-making method with quick-pour cement. They learned how architects and builders use both imagination and materials to shape the spaces around us—and how their own ideas can have an impact on the built environment.

By the end of the day, each participant took home their own finished model—a one-of-a-kind project reflecting their creativity and design thinking.

This event was recommended for those aged 15–22. Snacks and drinks were provided.

As with all our youth programs, this event was free.

Jim Zack

Jim Zack is an architect, builder, maker, and creative who loves exploring how ideas turn into real things. Before becoming an architect, Jim learned to work with his hands—building with wood, metal, and even motorcycles—and he brings that same curiosity and craft to the way he teaches design today.

As the co-founder of Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction, Jim works on everything from modern homes to custom furniture, always blending imagination with hands-on making. He’s excited to share that process with young people, helping them sketch, experiment, and build their own creations.

Jim is also a parent of two, and knows how important it is for kids to see that their voices and ideas can shape the world around them.
